Ben Jacobs is reporting that Liverpool are “ahead in the process” compared to their rivals in the race to sign Borussia Dortmund star Jude Bellingham.

It is well-known that Liverpool are trying to sign Bellingham ahead of this summer’s transfer window.

The addition of the teenager would be a major shot in the arm for Jurgen Klopp’s side as their midfield is arguably their weak point at the moment.

Bellingham has performed brilliantly for Dortmund over the past couple of years as he has established himself as one of the best young players in the world.

Dortmund are pretty resigned to Bellingham leaving in the near future. His contract is due to expire in 2025 and he is also attracting interest from Man City and Real Madrid.

Jacobs has now provided an update about Bellingham’s situation for TEAMtalk. It is indicated that Liverpool are in ‘dreamland’ as they have taken steps to ensure that they are among the “frontrunners” to sign the midfielder.

“Jude Bellingham hasn’t decided anything categorically,” Jacobs told TEAMtalk. “And why should he because ultimately, he’s got a massive amount of suitors and it’s going to be the big race over the summer.

“It’s fair to term Liverpool and Real Madrid the frontrunners, but Manchester City are certainly ramping up their own efforts.

“And when I say frontrunners, I mean Liverpool and Real Madrid have put in the legwork. They’ve worked the family side, they’ve got strong connections with the player, they’ve discussed what a deal might look like.

“And to get a player like Bellingham, you have to window-plan and work far in advance and a consistent narrative is really key.

“So the player buys into the short term, the long term, the manager, the owners, the city, the financial package. And this is what Liverpool and to a slightly lesser extent, Real Madrid have done.”

Earlier this month, and wait for Liverpool if they fail to qualify for the Champions League.

This is described as a ‘major fear of Jurgen Klopp’ but Jacobs has settled Liverpool’s nerves. He adds that they can “get away” with not playing in the Champions League in “one season” if Bellingham “believes in the project”.

“But Manchester City and Real Madrid are more likely at this stage to have Champions League football next season.

“And that, again, is why long-term planning is so important because Liverpool and Chelsea will find this with targets.

“They may well might be able to get away with not having Champions League football in one season. That’s if the player believes in the project and really wants to join, and they’re only going to be in that scenario if they trust you, if they’ve spoken to you over a long period of time.”

Jacobs continued: “That’s what gives Liverpool a bit of confidence.”
