Erling Haaland has become the first player ever to win both Player of the Season and Young Player of the Season in the Premier League’s annual awards.
The Norwegian, who moved to City for £67m in the summer, will add the two gongs to the Football Writers’ Footballer of the Year award he won earlier this month.
Haaland has scored 36 Premier League goals this season to break Alan Shearer’s long-standing record, and has 52 goals across all competitions, as well as nine assists.
The 22-year-old lifted the Premier League trophy last weekend and could yet win an historic treble in his debut season.
Reflecting on an incredible first year in England, Haaland admitted during the title celebrations that it had been a “special” year under Pep Guardiola.
“It is unreal. I don’t know what to say. I am so happy,” Haaland told Sky Sports. “These are the memories I will remember for the rest of my life.
“I don’t know what to say. It is special. I am going to enjoy this day. It is amazing. Debut season, 36 goals, Premier League trophy and two more finals to come. Not bad.”
And Haaland described winning both end-of-season awards as an “honour” while thanking everyone at Manchester City.
“I am honoured to have become the first player to win both awards in the same season – thank you to everyone who voted for me,” he said.
“It has been an incredible first season in the Premier League and lifting the trophy last weekend in front of our fans at the Etihad was a very special moment for me.
“These awards would not have been possible without my amazing team-mates, the manager and all of the staff at the club who help me perform on the pitch. Now we have two more finals to go and we want to finish the season strong.”
