Arsenal are ‘cautiously optimistic’ the ankle injury Bukayo Saka sustained against Nottingham Forest on Sunday is not serious.

Saka limped off during his side’s 5-0 victory in the Premier League on Sunday afternoon.

The England winger started the game brightly, assisting Gabriel Martinelli’s opener after five minutes.

He struggled with an ankle knock following a few tough challenges from Forest’s Renan Lodi.

Saka had also crashed into an advertising board behind the goal in the tenth minute.

Replaced after only 27 minutes, Arsenal and England are yet to discover the full extent of the youngster’s injury.

With a huge clash against Chelsea coming up before a trip to Wolves on November 12, Mikel Arteta will hope to have his star player fully fit before the World Cup.

The 21-year-old is a certainty to be included in Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the tournament in Qatar.

With several injuries already impacting his selection process, Southgate will be hoping Saka’s problem is not serious.

There has been some inevitability that Saka would eventually pick up an injury with the high amount of minutes he has played over the last 18 months.

The fact he is frequently on the end of hefty challenges from defenders has not helped proceedings, either.

However, The Sun are reporting that Arsenal feel optimistic that Saka will be fit for the World Cup and could even play against Chelsea on Sunday.

Arsenal host FC Zurich in the Europa League on Thursday, with the England winger extremely unlikely to feature.

He also left the ground after the match without the need for crutches or a protective boot.

The London-born winger has been instrumental in Arsenal being top of the Premier League table and their Europa League group.

He has featured in all 17 matches this season, scoring five and assisting five.

Saka also played all six of England’s Nations League matches this year and will be unlucky to not be a regular starter at the World Cup in Qatar.

The 20-cap Three Lions star became the third-youngest player to assist 20 goals in the Premier League with his cross for Martinelli against Forest.

After the win, manager Mikel Arteta discussed Saka’s ankle injury.

“Hopefully not,” Arteta replied when asked if Saka’s World Cup was in doubt.

“It was a bad challenge and he was not comfortable.

“No news yet so we will have to wait and see.”
