Philipp’s move from Wolfsburg to Werder was announced on Monday, the penultimate day of the winter transfer window and two days after the two sides met in what was a 2-1 victory over Ole Werner’s side. “On the Saturday I didn’t have any idea about Werder’s interest and therefore didn’t think about anything in particular.” Before the transfer came about, there was a potential return home to Berlin for the forward. “I was in discussions with Hertha, but that came to an end quite abruptly,” Philipp told the press, who indicated that Werder were not a back-up option. “Absolutely not. Of course, I was pleased that Hertha got in contact, but I have to look at what suits me. I decided to go for the best footballing fit for myself.”

New chance at Werder

Philipp’s chances were limited in Wolfsburg, but there are fresh opportunities in Bremen. “I’m coming from a situation in Wolfsburg where I was in and out of the matchday squad. I needed a change and Werder’s attractive style of play and suits me.”

The loan only being a half-season long does not mean that the ex-Freiburg and Dortmund man does not see a long-term future here. “Of course you don’t come to a club for half a year if you know you don’t want to stay for a long time. If I weren’t happy with the move, I wouldn’t have done it.”

Despite the expectations, the new signing is aware that he’s in a competition for places at his new club. “Of course, nobody is able to coast here. I’m the new guy and I’m coming in to push for a place. I want to make it as difficult for the coach as possible.”
