Squad news: Along with Manuel Mbom and Felix Agu, who are still out, it is still too early for Mitchell Weiser and Dikeni Salifou to be available. Ole Werner revealed the news at the press conference ahead of the game. In addition, Niklas Stark will not be in the squad after receiving his fifth yellow card.

The head coach on the opponents: “Bochum play with lots of intensity and press aggressively all over the pitch, no matter who the opponent is. That’s why it’s important for us to make quick decisions and to be willing to work hard to find and open up the right spaces. Bochum also use a lot of long balls, they have good finishers and a lot of pace up front, which they will try and bring into the game,” explained the 34-year-old.

Excellent record for the Green-Whites

Previous encounters: SVW have a consistently positive record against the upcoming opponents. In the last five games, the Green-Whites have only dropped points in a 0-0 draw in 2008. Since then they have enjoyed four victories. The reverse fixture away from home was an even game until Niclas Füllkrug was able to beat keeper Manuel Riemann twice in the final minutes, first with a header and then a penalty. Apart from the match this season, the last meeting between the two teams was several years ago, when Werder won 3-2 at home in March 2010, perhaps a good omen for Saturday.

Favourite opponents: Werder have proven superior over the team from the Ruhr. They have no better win rate (63%) and average points (2.1) than against the team that is 16th in the Bundesliga. SVW have been particularly successful at home in the past: they have faced Bochum 35 times, only one of which ended in a loss. Marvin Ducksch has also been consistently successful against VfL so far. The 28-year-old has not scored as many goals against any other team, with six in total.
