After a season together, 1. FC Union Berlin and winger Robin Gosens are going their separate ways. The 30-year-old is moving to Serie A’s AC Fiorentina on loan.
Bundesliga as a big dream
In the summer of 2023, the Emmerich native fulfilled his personal dream when he signed up to play in his home country and make his first appearances in the Bundesliga after almost ten years as a professional. He came to Berlin-Köpenick as a Champions League finalist with Internazionale and quickly demonstrated his experience, and particularly his goalscoring ability to the German public. After seven matchdays last season, the left-footer had already scored four league goals, including a brace in the 4-1 win at Darmstadt. He also featured in every game in the Champions League, scoring the opening goal in Union’s 1-1 draw in Braga.
Gosens can look back on 39 competitive appearances, with seven goals and four assists, during his time with Union. As a regular in the final stretch of the season, he also helped secure Union’s Bundesliga safety in 2023/24.
The views on the transfer
“We had a difficult last season, but I always felt very comfortable here and wore the Union jersey with pride,” said Gosens on the completion of his loan back to Italy. “Many people have made my time here a very special one. I made friends here, was able to fulfil my dream of playing in the Bundesliga and am grateful to the fans, the staff, the coaching team and my team-mates and friends and will always have positive memories of them.’
Union’s director of men’s professional football, Horst Heldt, meanwhile, had this to say of Gosens. “It’s no secret what ambitions Robin had when he joined Union last summer. He was a player for us who always showed full commitment. Robin gave his all in a difficult season and we give him a lot of credit for that. Now I wish him all the best and every success for the time ahead in Florence.”
