1. FC Union Berlin have signed 28-year-old goalkeeper Frederik Rönnow from Eintracht Frankfurt. The Danish international was on loan last season at Schalke and completes Urs Fischer’s goalkeeping trio for the 2021/22 Bundesliga season.

Rönnow came through the youth academy of Horsens, whilst getting first-team experience on loan at Esbjerg. His performances earned him a transfer to Danish champions Brondby where he made 120 competitive appearances, winning the Danish Cup. Eintracht Frankfurt signed the Dane in 2018 and after two seasons, he went out on loan to Schalke. Rönnow was part of Kasper Hjulmand’s Denmark squad for the 2020 European Championship, which lost in the semi-final to England at Wembley.

“I’m very happy with the move to Union. Last season wasn’t easy for me, but I want to put it all behind me and I’m looking forward to the new challenge in Berlin. What the team showed last season was impressive. I want to do my bit to be successful this season as well and play a good role in all three competitions,” said Frederik Rönnow.

“With the signing of Frederik Rönnow, our planning for the goalkeeper position for this season is now complete. He is a goalkeeper with international experience who wants to compete for the number one spot. With him and both Andreas Luthe and Jakob Busk, we are really well positioned in this area,” said Oliver Ruhnert, 1. FC Union Berlin’s Managing Director for Professional Football.

Due to his extended participation at the European Championship, Rönnow will join up with the squad on July 30.
