Switzerland won the first of the EURO round of 16 ties early on Saturday evening, seeing off reigning champions Italy 2-0. VfB’s new recruit Fabian Rieder was in the Swiss starting line-up, before giving way to his future club teammate Leonidas Stergiou in the 71stminute.
In the following match, Germany also recorded a 2-0 win, defeating Denmark in an eventful contest which featured disallowed goals on either side and even an interruption due to adverse weather conditions. Of the VfB players in the Germany squad, Waldemar Anton came off the bench in the 88th minute to get his first taste of EURO football.
Switzerland will play their quarter-final on Saturday 6 July against the winner of the match between England and Slovakia. The day before, Friday 5 July, will see Germany take on the winner of the Spain–Georgia clash here in Stuttgart.
