Sebastian Hoeneß’s team had the better of play from the off, but the hosts were solid in defence and quick on the counter.
Chances for Führich, Undav and Leweling
Chris Führich had the first decent chance of the match in the 13th minute but pulled the ball wide of the target. On the half-hour mark, Deniz Undav saw his shot from distance saved by Tomas Koubek. Five minutes later, the Augsburg ’keeper tipped a Jamie Leweling effort onto the post, again preventing Stuttgart from taking the lead, and so the two teams went into the break level at 0-0.
Guirassy on the mark
VfB got the second half off to a perfect start with Enzo Millot setting up Serhou Guirassy in the 47th minute, and his goal gave them a deserved 1-0 lead. Three minutes later, Führich was poised to double the advantage but his close-range effort was saved by that man Koubek once again, and the Augsburg goalie was also on hand in the 87th minute, this time to keep out Silas.
Well-earned win
Hoeneß’s team ended up bringing home a tight but highly deserved 1-0 win from Augsburg, which propels them up to second in the league for the time being.
Goal
47th minute: From just inside his own half, Millot threads a beautiful pass through to Guirassy, who makes it 1-0 with his 26th goal of the season.
