Sebastian Hoeneß’s side had more of the play in the early stages, with over 70 percent possession in the first quarter of an hour, but it was the hosts who took the lead on the counter in the 20th minute through Jonas Wind.
Stuttgart continued to dominate at the Volkswagen Arena and when Sebastiaan Bornauw fouled Jamie Leweling in the 32nd minute, Enzo Millot equalised on the rebound after his penalty had been saved.
Karazor dismissed
With 63 minutes on the clock, Atakan Karazor was shown a controversial second yellow card. A man down, VfB were again hit on the counter in the 68th minute as Mohammed Amoura put Wolfsburg 2-1 up.
VfB showed fight, commitment and spirit to prevent a defeat and were rewarded in stoppage time, when Deniz Undav turned in Maxi Mittelstädt’s inviting cross.
Goals:
20’: Wolfsburg win the ball from a VfB throw-in and launch a well-worked counter, with Wind finishing it off to put the Wolves 1-0 up.
32’: Bornauw brings down Leweling in the box. Millot’s penalty is saved but the Frenchman puts away the rebound to make it 1-1.
68’: After Undav loses the ball in the middle of the park, Amoura sets off and fires VfL back in front.
90’+ 7: Undav equalises deep into stoppage time after good play from Mittelstädt. Overdue and deserved!
