Sebastian Hoeneß, VfB head coach: “This is a frustrating defeat. We had the first clear-cut chance of the game when Deniz went one-on-one with the goalkeeper. We didn’t look good in the situation leading up to the penalty and we just gave Bremen the chance to take the lead. We had another big chance in the second half. It was from that situation that Bremen hit us on the break – again, we didn’t look good. Today Bremen had what we were lacking: efficiency and precision.”
Maximilian Mittelstädt: “We had some good chances at the start of the game. If we’d put one of those away, the game could have panned out very differently. We’ve only got ourselves to blame that instead we went 2-0 down. Having said that, even after their second goal we kept attacking and creating chances, but it just wasn’t enough in the end. It’s up to us how we finish the season in the coming weeks.”
Deniz Undav: “The first half was one of our worst halves this season. We didn’t have any real control of the game and the opposition won all the second balls. I should have scored the chance I had. We have to start the game better against Leverkusen next week; we’ll need to make the most of our chances.”
