Guirassy strikes

Sebastian Hoeneß’s side began in typically impressive fashion against the promoted outfit, linking up well and dominating from the outset. They took a deserved 1-0 lead into the break thanks to Serhou Guirassy’s goal just before half-time.

Stiller doubles the advantage

Deniz Undav teed up Angelo Stiller for VfB’s second in the 53rd minute, but Heidenheim got back into the game a short while later following a mistake by Alexander Nübel, who fumbled a Tim Kleindienst header into his own net in the 62nd minute.

Kleindienst stuns VfB

Silas could only hit the post in the 74th minute with a chance to put the game to bed for VfB, who then neglected their defensive duties and allowed the visitors back in it. Heidenheim ruthlessly took advantage, with the unmarked Kleindienst scoring twice in quick succession (84’, 85’) to turn the match on its head. VfB refused to give up, though, and grabbed an equaliser via Undav in the 98th minute, after a dramatic finale.

Goals

41’: After some neat build-up and a great assist from Stiller, Guirassy is in the right place inside the box to put VfB in front.

53’: Undav plays a fantastic pass to Stiller, who keeps his nerve in front of the Heidenheim goal to double the lead.

62’: Kleindienst’s header slips out of Nübel’s hands and bobbles over the line to give the visitors a lifeline.

84’: Some slack defending from VfB leaves Kleindienst unmarked at the back post, and he levels the score with a volley.

85’: Kleindienst strikes again after losing his marker once more, his close-range header leaving Nübel no chance.

90’+8: With just seconds to go until the final whistle, Undav brilliantly controls a long ball from Maximilian Mittelstädt, turns and buries the equaliser.
