Guirassy opens the scoring
Right from the kick-off, fans at the Volkswagen Arena were treated to an intensive and hard-fought match, with Sebastian Hoeneß’s team having the upper hand in terms of creative play. Stuttgart were good value for their 14th-minute lead courtesy of Serhou Guirassy and after that, they were solid in defence, maintaining their one-goal advantage through to the half-time break.
Exciting second period
In the second half, Wolfsburg upped the tempo of the match and an enthralling 45 minutes ensued. Joakim Maehle equalised in the 50th minute, only to foul Enzo Millot in the box a mere 60 seconds later, and Guirassy put away the penalty for a 2-1 lead.
Vagnoman scored from long range in the 77th minute to make it 3-1, but when Lukas Nmecha pulled one back for Wolfsburg in the 83rd minute, it meant a fast and furious end to the match, with VfB digging deep to bring home a tight but hard-fought away win.
Goals
14th minute: A lovely cross from Maximilian Mittelstädt sees Guirassy outmuscle Moritz Jenz and nod home into the right-hand corner.
50th minute: Wolfsburg string together some slick passes in the box to get round the VfB defence and that leaves Alex Nübel with no chance against Maehle, who fires home from close range.
54th minute: Millot is brought down in the box and Guirassy converts the resulting penalty to make it 2-1.
77th minute: Jamie Leweling lays a perfect pass on the edge of the box to Vagnoman, who slides a shot past Koen Casteels into the bottom left-hand corner to give VfB a 3-1 lead.
83rd minute: The ball bounces loose off Vagnoman’s back and into the path of Lukas Nmecha, who stabs home from six yards to halve the deficit.
