Just a few days after the Bundesliga season came to its conclusion, FSV Mainz are pleased to announce the signing of Maxim Leitsch from VfL Bochum. The 24-year-old central defender worked his way through the ranks at VfL and is now an established Bundesliga player. He made a total of 93 appearances for Bochum in all competitions, including 19 in the top flight (2 goals, 1 assist) and he became a rock at the back for the club. Leitsch also has experience on the international stage and was selected for Germany at the U18, U19 and U21 levels. The 24-year-old has signed for Mainz until 2026 for an undisclosed fee.

“We knew we wanted to sign Maxim early on in our squad planning and we are delighted that we can bring him to Mainz. He is a great fit for us, both in terms of his footballing ability and in how he conducts himself off the pitch. It is a big step for Maxim to leave his native Bochum to come to us, but he will find his second home here,” said sporting director Martin Schmidt.

Maxim is a quick, robust defender who is good on the ball. He is an intelligent young man with enormous potential.

Bo Svensson was also delighted with the signing of Leitsch: “Maxim has proven how talented he is, both in the Bundesliga this season and in the second division last year. He fits the bill as a young and talented German player, who wants to take the next steps in his career at our club. Maxim is a quick, robust defender who is good on the ball. He is an intelligent young man with enormous potential. I am delighted that the signing has worked out and that he wants to continue his journey here at Mainz.”

Maxim Leitsch stated: “I spent many years at Bochum, my hometown club, and I am incredibly grateful for everything that I learned there. However, I think a change of scenery is what I need in order to further my development and I want to take the next steps at Mainz. I got the impression that I was really wanted and I have only heard good things about the club. It seems like a really welcoming environment. It seems like the right fit and I am looking forward to the new challenge. I already know Anton Stach, Jonny Burkardt and Finn Dahmen from the U21 national team.”
