Five Mainz 05 players are currently representing their countries on international duty. Leandro Barreiro, Karim Onisiwo, Anton Stach and Silvan Widmer each have one UEFA Nations League fixture behind them, while Jonny Burkardt and Germany U21s booked their ticket to next year’s European Championship.

Barreiro and Luxembourg overcame Lithuania 2-0 on Saturday, with the 22-year-old starting the game and playing the full match. Last night saw Barreiro and his team pick up another win against Faroe Islands, with the Mainz man again playing the full distance and winning the penalty that decided the game. Luxembourg are currently second in Group 1 and will face Turkey in their next Nations League match on Saturday evening (20:45 CEST) before taking on Faroe Islands again on Tuesday evening (20:45 CEST).

Burkardt scores, Onisiwo gets assist

Elsewhere, Burkardt and Germany U21s qualified for the U21 European Championship finals in Georgia and Romania in 2023. The defending champions tied up qualification last Friday in Osnabrück with a 4-0 win over Hungary. Burkardt captained the side and played the full 90 minutes, converting a penalty to make it 2-0. Burkardt played another 90 minutes last night as Germany ended their qualification campaign with another win, defeating Poland 2-1.

Onisiwo and Austria are also in Nations League action. New head coach Ralf Rangnick made his debut in charge of the team last Friday in Croatia, with Onisiwo being named in the starting CI and setting up Marko Arnautovic’s goal shortly before half time as Austria went on to win 3-0. Onisiwo did not feature in the next game when Austria fell to a 2-1 defeat against Denmark on Monday. Austria will welcome France on Friday (20:45 CEST) before taking on Denmark in their final game of the international window the following Monday (20:45 CEST).

Stach was called up to the Germany national team but has so far not featured in either game. Hansi Flick’s team drew 1-1 against Italy last Saturday and picked up the same result against England last night. Stach will hope for some action when Germany take on Hungary on Saturday (20:45 CEST) and Italy on Tuesday (20:45 CEST).

Widmer and Switzerland suffered defeats in their first two Nations League group matches. The right back played 90 minutes as his team narrowly lost 2-1 to Czech Republic and was not used in his side’s 4-0 loss to Portugal. Next on the agenda for Wider and co. is a clash with Spain before they face Portugal again in Group 2.

After that, the Mainz players can look forward to a well-deserved summer break. The players not involved in international fixtures will return to training on 21st June, while head coach Bo Svensson can welcome those who were on international duty back on 11th July.
