On Saturday afternoon (15:30 CEST), 1. FSV Mainz 05 head to the Allianz Arena in Munich. After a successful busy week with three wins against Werder Bremen, VfB Lübeck and 1. FC Köln, Mainz look to continue their successful form away at FC Bayern, a game described however by Bo Svensson as the “toughest game of the season.” However, Mainz will still look to “give it everything and bring our own game to the pitch, even when the going gets tough,” as the head coach explained in Thursday’s press conference.

A look at the opponent

FC Bayern Munich has the largest number of members of every football club in the world with 295,000. Bayern are both the record league winners as well as the record cup holders with 32 and 20 wins respectively. Between 2013-2022, Bayern have had continuous success in the league, winning the Bundesliga every year in that span of time. In both 2013 and 2020 the Bavarian side even completed the treble, winning the league, the cup and the Champions League all in the same year.

Head-to-head record

Bayern Munich are streaks ahead in the head-to-head record with Mainz in the Bundesliga. Bayern have won 23 of the past 32 games between the two sides, Mainz have come out on top in 6 of them, whilst 3 have ended in draws. However, Mainz have been far better in recent clashes. The Zerofivers have won their last 2 home games against the record champions and looked good for long periods in the away game at the Allianz last season, even heading into the break in front, although they ended up losing the game 2-1.

Stronger than you’d think

With 22 points from their opening 11 games this season, Bayern have six fewer points than they did at this stage of last season. Julian Nagelsmann’s men have actually won four more points against the opponents they have faced this season than they did last year and have scored nine more goals.

Top of the away form table

Mainz 05 are currently top of the away form table. From their six away games so far, Mainz have secured 12 points and have got more points in opposition stadiums than they did all of last year.

Zerofivers full of confidence

FSV have won their last three competitive matches and, in that time, have not conceded a single goal. The squad secured wins against Bremen (2-0) and Köln (5-0) to bag six points there, as well as a convincing win over Lübeck (3-0) to progress into the round of 16 of the DFB-Pokal.

Svensson has seen it all before

Mainz head coach Bo Svensson has a strong Bundesliga record against Bayern as both a player and a manger. He has beaten them five times, drawn twice and lost thrice.

Bo Svensson seen here as Mainz beat FC bayern 2-1 at home in the 2009/10 season.

Aarón mastering free-kicks

Aarón is the only other player in the Bundesliga, alongside Daichi Kamada, to have already scored two direct free-kicks. The Mainz right-back seems to particularly enjoy playing against opponents from the Rhineland, having scored against Borussia Mönchengladbach and most recently against 1. FC Köln. The Spaniard scored a free-kick against Bayer Leverkusen in February 2022.

Ex-Mainz man among opposition ranks

Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting played a key role in Bayern’s DFB-Pokal win over Augsburg with three goal involvements, and has also scored in the last two Bundesliga games. He has only ever scored in three consecutive Bundesliga games for Mainz, the club for which he played 74 league matches between 2011 and 2014.

Effective Ingvartsen

Marcus Ingvartsen has already scored three times this Bundesliga season, against Leipzig, Bremen and Köln. All three of those were scored by the Dane to put Mainz 1-0 up. With just five appearances and 279 match minutes under his belt, he’s scoring at a rate of a goal every 93 minutes.

Two athletic sides

Bayern München and Mainz 05 find themselves among the top of any table to do with running so far this season. The Zerofivers are the side with the third highest distance covered per match, while FC Bayern complete the most sprints in an attacking direction in the league.

Few goals conceded

Only three teams have conceded fewer goals than Mainz so far this season (13). One of those sides is FC Bayern, who currently have the best defence in the league with eight goals against.

Match officials

Felix Zwayer is the man in the middle this Saturday, with Marco Achmüller and Thomas Gorniak running the sidelines. All information pertaining to referee appointments can be found on the DFB homepage.
