RBL have top home record against Mainz 05

“We played brilliantly. Every shot was a goal. It is unbelievable, we could hardly explain ourselves what happened here.” These were the words of Timo Werner on 2nd November 2019, after RB Leipzig celebrated an 8-0 home win over 1. FSV Mainz 05.

For coach at the time Julian Nagelsmann, the performance was “close to a perfect game” and Marcel Halstenberg said: “I think it was a perfect day!” The 8-0 was RBL’s highest win in the Bundesliga at that points and remains so to this day.

24 goals in six home games

Winning quite so dominantly is obviously a rarity, but wins and high-scoring wins against Mainz 05 at the Red Bull Arena are not.

In their Bundesliga history, RBL have scored more home goals against Mainz than against any other opponent. These 24 goals came in six games, so at an average of four-a-game. RBL have not lost any of these six games, and only one has ended in a draw.

The team want to continue the run this coming Saturday (15:30 CEST). High-scoring or not, the most important thing is that the team get over the line with a win and another three valuable points in the race for Champions League qualification.
 

Key role for Timo Werner

It will not be an easy task, with Mainz is good form. RBL have the second-best record at home this Bundesliga season, while the Zerofivers have the second-best record in the second half of the season. Bo Svensson’s side are six games unbeaten, and have won four out of the six games.

Timo Werner could play a key role in the game, with a good past record against Mainz. In 14 Bundesliga games against Mainz, Timo has scored 13 goals. Three of these came in the 8-0 win mentioned above.
 

Especially good at home

Timo has done particularly well at home, picking up eight of his nine Bundesliga goal contributions at the Red Bull Arena. He has scored in his last two games at home, in the 2-1 win against Eintracht Frankfurt and in the 3-0 win against Borussia Mönchengladbach, opening the scoring both times.
