RB Leipzig vs. Manchester City
RB Leipzig are back in Champions League action on 22nd February! Manchester City will visit the RB Arena on Wednesday night for the first leg of the round of 16, with kick off at 21:00 CET.
We faced Pep Guardiola’s side last season in the group stage. After losing 6-3 away in Manchester, RBL won 2-1 in the reverse fixture to show that they can match the English champions.
We have taken on a number of English sides in the Champions League over the years. As well as Manchester City, the Bulls have played Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester United and Liverpool. We have an even record from these games, and a strong record at home.
Record against English sides
RB Leipzig have played English sides eight times in the Champions League, facing Spurs, Manchester United, Liverpool and Manchester City all twice. Interestingly, none of these eight games have ended in a draw. RBL have won four times and lost four times, with three of the victories coming in Leipzig.
30 goals have been scored in these eight matches, 12 by RBL and 18 by the English sides. In the four home games, Leipzig have found the net eight times and only conceded five goals. Our top goalscorer against English sides isChristopher Nkunku with three goals.
A look back at previous meetings
Tottenham Hotspur (Champions League 2019/20)
Our first clash with an English opponent came in the last 16 three years ago.
Timo Werner scored the only goal of the first leg in North London from the penalty spot in the 58th minute on 19th February 2020. Three weeks later in Leipzig, Marcel Sabitzer’s brace in the first half effectively sealed RBL’s place in the quarterfinalsfor the first time. Emil Forsbergadded a third goal late on.
Manchester United (Champions League 2020/21)
The following year saw us drawn against Manchester United in the group stage.
The away game in October didn’t go to plan on matchday 2 as the hosts ran out 5-0 winners at Old Trafford. However, the final game of the group saw RBL get their revenge. Angeliño, Amadou Haidara and Justin Kluivert had Leipzig 3-0 up after 69 minutes, though two late United goals made things interesting. Nevertheless, Leipzig held on to knock the Red Devils out and progress to the knockouts.
Liverpool (Champions League 2020/21)
We were then drawn against Jürgen Klopp’s Liverpool in the last 16. Due to Corona regulations back then, both games were played in the Puskás Aréna in Budapest.
Liverpool won both legs 2-0, thanks to goals from Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mané each time.
Manchester City (Champions League 2021/22)
We faced our upcoming opponents two years ago in the group stage.
The first clash in September 2021 in Manchester was an extremely entertaining one. Despite a hat-trick from Christopher Nkunku, City won 6-3 at the Etihad. We were able to end the group on a high in December by defeating Pep & Co. 2-1 thanks to goals from Dominik Szoboszlai and André Silva.
