More than 2,500 RB Leipzig fans travelled to Dortmund to support their team on matchday 23 in the Bundesliga last Friday. This strong show of support was marred by around 20 flares, which were lit in the away block shortly prior to the start of the second half. Two persons not involved in the act of lighting the flares suffered injuries as a result. RB Leipzig immediately took action after the game to investigate this incident, together with Borussia Dortmund.

Johann Plenge, Chief Security Officer (CSO):

  • “We have maintained a zero-tolerance policy towards the use of pyrotechnics in the past and will continue to do so. RB Leipzig stand for a family-friendly fan culture that is free of violence. The use of pyrotechnics in a crowded fan block is dangerous and entirely unacceptable. We have received countless messages from fans and fan clubs over the weekend in which they expressed their opposition to the use of pyrotechnics. They can be assured of having our full support in this matter.”

Ulrich Wolter, Chief Relationship Officer (CRO):

  • “RB Leipzig will take the full range of legal and internal action available, which includes a local and nationwide stadium ban as well as monetary fines. We are already working to identify the perpetrators. We would like to apologise to our fans and all those in attendance in Dortmund.”
