RB Leipzig vs. Borussia Dortmund

RB Leipzig host Borussia Dortmund on Wednesday evening in the DFB-Pokal quarterfinal. Kick off at the sold-out Red Bull Arena is at 20:45 CEST.

Both sides will be looking to get back to winning ways, with RB Leipzig coming off the back of a 3-0 defeat against Mainz 05 and Dortmund having suffered a 4-2 defeat at the hands of FC Bayern.

Wednesday’s game will be the third meeting of the season between the two sides. Leipzig will have reason to be hopeful going into the game, with the home side having come out on top on in each of the two previous fixtures. A victory on Wednesday would mark ten consecutive DFB-Pokal wins for RBL.

RBL and BVB’s paths to the quarterfinals

Match report from our 3-0 home win earlier this season

Opposition analysis: BVB

Form

Despite a loss in Munich last time out, Borussia Dortmund are enjoying a strong 2023. In fact, the defeat against the record champions was BVB’s first league defeat of the calendar year. The 4-2 defeat saw Dortmund leapfrogged to top spot by their opponents on the weekend. BVB now sit in second place on 53 points, two points behind Bayern.

Dortmund enjoyed a run of ten consecutive wins, before a defeat to Chelsea in the second leg of their Champions League last-16 tie at the beginning of March. The 2-0 defeat was enough to undo their good work in the first leg and saw them eliminated from the Champions League.

Dortmund’s route to the quarterfinals

BVB have been drawn as the away side in each of their DFB-Pokal ties so far this season.

Donyell Malen, Jude Bellingham and Karim Adeyemi scored in the 3-0 first-round victory over TSV 1860 Munich, before a Bellingham goal and an own goal saw Edin Terzic’s side defeat Hannover 96 2-0 in the next round.

In the third round, Dortmund were made to work hard by fellow Bundesliga side VfL Bochum. Emre Can and captain Marco Rose were on the scoresheet in a 2-1 win.

Leipzig’s route to the quarterfinals

RB Leipzig have enjoyed comfortable wins in each round of the cup this season. The title defence got off to a good start with an 8-0 win over Teutonia Ottensen, before a 4-0 win against Hamburger SV in the next round. RBL also met Bundesliga opposition in the third round and came out on top with a 3-1 win over Hoffenheim.

Squad

Key players

Despite an error leading to Bayern’s opening goal on Saturday, Gregor Kobel has still been one of the league’s best goalkeepers this season.

The tall Swiss shot-stopper is strong in the air and boasts quick reactions too. He has kept nine clean sheets in the league this season, as well as two each in both the DFB-Pokal and the Champions League.

Return to the national team

Emre Can is a key man in defensive midfield for BVB. The 29-year-old is a real leader and a tough tackler too.

His strong performances earned him a return to the national team setup for the games against Peru and Belgium at the end of March, his first caps in almost two years.

Quality up front

Midfielder Jude Bellingham is one of Europe’s most sought-after youngsters. The Englishman is extremely talented and can get involved in their attacking play with ease.

Striker Sébastien Haller is strong in the air and can hold the ball up for his teammates, whilst also looking to get shots away himself. Donyell Malen, who possesses lots of pace and is a good dribbler, mainly features out wide.

Missing players

Thomas Meunier (back problems) and Giovanni Reyna (cold) are also both unavailable.

Coach

Edin Terzić is a Dortmund fan through and through and used to stand on the terraces watching his current employers. The 40-year-old initially worked as a scout at BVB, before spells with the U16s, U19s as assistant, the U17s and the U23s.

Terzić was Slaven Billic’s assistant coach at Besiktas (2013-2015) and at West Ham United in the Premier League (2015-2017).

From the terraces to the DFB-Pokal trophy

Terzić returned to Dortmund five years ago to work under Lucien Favre. He then took over when the Swiss head coach was sacked towards the end of 2020.

As interim coach, Terzić guided Dortmund to Champions League qualification and then won the DFB-Pokal in 2021. He likes his teams to set up with a 4-2-3-1 formation.

Head-to-head record

Third meeting this season

RB Leipzig and Borussia Dortmund have already met twice this season. Marco Rose’s first game in charge on matchday 6 was a memorable one as we won 3-0 thanks to goals from Willi Orbán, Dominik Szoboszlai and Doudou Haidara at the Red Bull Arena.

The return fixture in Dortmund was only a few weeks ago on 3rd March. The hosts won 2-1 on matchday 23. They were 2-0 up at the break thanks to a Marco Reus penalty and a deflected Emre Can strike. Emil Forsberg pulled one back with 15 minutes to play, but Leipzig couldn’t get their reward for a strong second half performance.

Dortmund have the edge in the overall head-to-head record. They have won eight of the 15 meetings to date, with Leipzig claiming five victories. The points have been shared just twice.
