Serge Gnabry was lightning quick to react: after Nadiem Amiri had slipped a ball through to him, the 22-year-old looked up briefly, saw Leipzig keeper Péter Gulácsi standing a little too far in front of his goal, and then tried his luck from 43.5 metres out – with spectacular results. The ball took flight, dipped perfectly into the space between the goalkeeper’s gloves and the crossbar and rippled the back of the Leipzig net. 3-0 to TSG; the battle between two teams near the top of the table was decided. And TSG had a clear winner for their Goal of the Year, a real masterpiece created in the Kraichgau.
Gnabry was the first TSG player to win the vote for Goal of the Month on ARD-Sportschau. For a long time he remained the only one – but that has now changed. Paulina Krumbiegel recently won the award for her spectacular strike against MSV Duisburg.
