Player of the Season nominees: Moritz Nicolas
Moritz Nicolas has been nominated for our Player of the Season for 2023/24, presented by Cichon Personalmanagement, along with Rocco Reitz, Robin Hack and Franck Honorat. Today, we take a closer look at Moritz Nicolas’ season.
Moritz Nicolas is one of four Borussia players who have been nominated for our Player of the Season for 2023/24. The goalkeeper has been at Gladbach since 2015 and spent the previous two seasons out on loan at Viktoria Köln and Roda JC Kerkrade respectively. This season, the 26-year-old came in for the injured Jonas Omlin and became a fixture in the Borussia goal.
Nicolas was named Player of the Month for both January and February. The netminder won this title by some distance in January with 41 percent of the Foals supporters’ votes, having earned this with consistently good performances in the Gladbach goal. This could be seen particularly in the 0-0 draw against eventual double winners Leverkusen, when his nine saves made a huge contribution to our hard-fought point at the BayArena. He also came top of the fan vote in February with 39 percent. He was not just singled out for praise by the fans, but also by the well-known sport magazine Kicker, who named Nicolas in their Team of the Week for Matchday 22 after his seven stops in the 2-0 defeat to RB Leipzig.
He played a total of 27 games and 2,430 minutes in the Bundesliga, making 118 saves, which put him fifth among all Bundesliga goalkeepers. He also had the ninth-highest save percentage at 69.9 percent – fifth amongst those who played more than ten matches. Nicolas kept four league clean sheets, as well as one in the DFB-Pokal.
Moritz Nicolas is up against Rocco Reitz, Robin Hack and Franck Honorat in the vote for Borussia’s Player of the Season. You can vote now for your pick in the ‘Umfrage’ section of the FohlenApp until Sunday, 2nd June at 23:59 CEST.
