Elvedi on the scoresheet for Switzerland
Nico Elvedi and Maximilian Wöber both celebrated friendly victories with their respective national sides on Tuesday evening, as preparations ramp up ahead of EURO 2024.
SWITZERLAND
Switzerland were on top form for their penultimate friendly ahead of the European Championships, running out 4-0 winners over Estonia in Lucerne. Nico Elvedi (photo: imago images/Langer) started in the heart of the defence for Murat Yakin’s side, and scored his second international goal in 52 caps with a close-range finish on 63 minutes. Steven Zuber and Zeki Amdouni had earlier put the Swiss two to the good, while a 70th minute penalty from Xherdan Shaqiri put the result beyond doubt. Elvedi and his teammates will face Austria in St. Gallen on Saturday (18:00 CEST) in their final warm-up game ahead of EURO 2024.
AUSTRIA
Ralf Rangnick’s Austria also emerged victorious on Tuesday night, beating Serbia 2-1 in Vienna for their sixth win on the bounce. Stefan Lainer remained on the bench throughout, but Max Wöber started and played just over an hour before being substituted. Patrick Wimmer and Christoph Baumgartner gave Austria a two-goal lead in the opening 15 minutes, before Serbia responded on 35 minutes through Strahinja Pavlovic, but the visitors were unable to mount a comeback. Austria will visit Switzerland on Saturday.
GERMANY
Despite creating a raft of chances in Nuremberg, Germany were unable to break down Ukraine and had to settle for a 0-0 draw in their penultimate game ahead of the EUROs. Head coach Julian Nagelsmann chose not to call upon the services of Gladbach’s Rocco Reitz, who will have to wait for his senior international bow. Germany will be at BORUSSIA-PARK on Friday (20:45 CEST) to take on Greece, exactly one week before they begin their European Championship campaign against Scotland.
