Borussia players called up for international duty

Five Borussia players have been called up by their national teams for upcoming friendlies, EURO qualifiers and the U21 European Championships.

Germany

Germany head coach Hansi Flick didn’t call up Jonas Hofmann (Photo: imago images) in March in order to allow him to take a look at some younger players. Hoffi has now returned to the Germany squad for their upcoming friendlies. On Monday, 12th June, Germany take on Ukraine, before games on Friday, 16th June against Poland and then on Tuesday, 20th June against Colombia.

Switzerland

Nico Elvedi has been called up by Switzerland head coach Murat Yakin for a pair of European qualifiers. Switzerland play in Andorra on Friday, 16th June and then on Monday, 19th June against Romania. Jonas Omlin was not called up following conversations between the Swiss Football Association, Borussia and the player himself.

Japan

Borussia’s centre-back Ko Itakura is once again in the Japan national team squad. The Samurai Blue are playing two friendlies in the upcoming international break: On Thursday, 15th June against El Salvador and then on Tuesday, 20th June against Peru.

Interim head coach B.J. Callaghan has called up Borussia’s right-back Joe Scally for a training camp in preparation for the Concacaf Nations League Final Four. The training camp will take place on Sunday, 4th June in Los Angeles. The Concacaf Nations League 2022/23 Final Four then takes places from the 15th until 18th June at the Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas.

Luxemburg

Yvandro Borges Sanches as well as academy goalkeeper Tiago Pereira Cardoso have been called up to the Luxemburg national team squad. Before the team continue their European qualifying campaign against Lichtenstein and Bosnia-Herzegovina, there is a friendly on Friday, 9th June against Malta.

Germany U21

Luca Netz has been called up to the Germany U21s preliminary squad ahead of the U21 European Championship in Romania and Georgia (21st June until 8th July 2023). A total of 26 players will travel to a training camp in Prad (South Tyrol) on 10th June. The Germany coaching staff then has until the 14th June to finalise a 23-man squad to send to UEFA ahead of the European Championship. The Germany team will play two friendlies during the training camp (10th until 18th June): On Monday, 12th June against a South Tyrol XI and then on Friday, 16th June behind closed doors against Switzerland U21s, who will also take part in the EUROs.

France U21

Manu Koné has been called up to the France U21s squad for the upcoming European Championship. The tournament in Georgia and Romania starts on the 21st June. France are in Group D, where they will face Italy, Norway and Switzerland. Before this, France play a friendly against Mexico on Friday, 16th June.
