After the game, captain Emre Can and sporting director Sebastian Kehl spoke to the media along with Gregor Kobel, Julian Brandt, Julian Ryerson and Felix Nmecha. The match reactions.

Gregor Kobel (to BVB TV): “It was a fortunate victory, it was a difficult game. Köln allowed themselves to withdrew and leave the ball to us. We showed mentality and ultimately picked up the three points with great desire. We need to move the ball more quickly and move the opposition more when they’re deep and compact.”

Julian Brandt (in the mixed zone): “No team is already at their maximum. I’ve learned: it takes weeks until you’re back in a rhythm in the Bundesliga. We’re still in a kind of pre-season. Gregor (editor’s note: Kobel) bailed us out and made two sensational stops. We didn’t have attacking momentum and we would usually see the one or two chances we had on the counter through more ruthlessly.”

Julian Ryerson (to BVB TV): “It wasn’t our best game. Fortunately we won. We had a lot of technical errors – and an opponent who made it difficult for us and challenged strongly in the centre. We had problems winning the second balls, that’s why they were able to switch. That’s why there were long distances and we couldn’t build this pressure up. Even though not everything worked: we must keep calm and work in a focused manner.”

Emre Can (to Sky): “We’re not yet at 100%, didn’t play a good game and must improve. In the end, what counts is that we won. We’ll take the three points. We were sluggish, we didn’t have any energy on the pitch. But that will come. And: we fought together! No matter how hard you train: the match rhythm is missing, fitness comes by playing games. I made a lot of mistakes and deserved to be substituted.”

Felix Nmecha (to BVB TV): “We had some good moments, but we gave away too many easy balls. I’m just happy that we won. It’s a big thing to play in front of these great fans. We’re not satisfied, but we’re happy that we won.”

Sebastian Kehl (in the mixed zone): “We didn’t play quickly enough, found too few solutions and repeatedly gave away counter-attacking opportunities. We positioned ourselves poorly and were not in the spaces we had discussed. Köln could have scored one or two goals. So it is a fortuitous victory that we will of course happily take.” (br)
