A week of home games for Borussia Dortmund will end with a match against Sport-Union Neckarsulm at 19:30 CET on Wednesday. Following their narrow defeat against Dunărea Brăila in the European League qualifying rounds, BVB now want to return to winning ways in the Bundesliga.

It was an extremely bitter moment when Mireya Gonzalez scored the last goal of the game for Dunărea Brăila virtually as the final whistle sounded and condemned BVB to a narrow 25-24 defeat. “We were not clever enough in the decisive phase and did not use too many free chances,” said Henk Groener in the direct aftermath of the match. But the Dortmund coach also emphasised that his team played and fought outstandingly for long stretches.

It is precisely those qualities that they will have to demonstrate on the court once again on Wednesday evening when they play host to Sport-Union Neckarsulm in the Bundesliga. The roles are clearly defined in this one, with Borussia the clear favourites. The visitors from Baden-Württemberg have yet to pick up a single point in seven matches, occupy bottom spot in the table and have thus fallen well short of their own expectations.

But BVB should not only have the advantage in terms of the quality of the squad, but also in terms of personnel. The situation has improved in the Black & Yellows camp. Zoë Sprengers managed to make her comeback from a muscle injury on Sunday, even if it was only for a cameo appearance. Centre-back Emma Olsson also returned after recovering from illness.

No wonder that Groener is in optimistic mood. “We will win if we go into the match with the same attitude as against Brăila, and that should be the objective. Neckarsulm have not started the season the way you might have expected, but we have to play our game,” the Dutchman commented. In any case, the head-to-head record speaks for itself: BVB have won 17 of their 18 meetings to date, with their last defeat coming back in May 2015.
