The abandonment of the Bundesliga match between VfL Bochum 1848 and Borussia Mönchengladbach is still being heard by the DFB Sports Court. Regardless of the verdict announced there, VfL will already take measures for the upcoming home match against Bayer 04 Leverkusen (Sunday, April 15, 2022, 3:30pm (CET)) to prevent incidents like the one against Mönchengladbach.

First and foremost, this includes the installation of additional video technology that uses high-resolution images to directly help identify potential trouble makers and therefore convict them. The investments that VfL is making in this area are already being made with a view to the coming seasons, so the facilities will remain permanent. In addition, VfL Bochum 1848 points out that in the future any recognisable misconduct will be consistently pursued and reported to the stadium ban committee.

After constructive and intensive discussions, as well as consideration of all perspectives brought forward, VfL Bochum 1848 has decided not to impose a collective punishment in the form of a ban on drinking from plastic cups in the stands. We continue to trust our fans and are determined to put the shared stadium experience clearly in the foreground.

To this end, however, we must once again make an urgent appeal to Bochum fans to value and protect the stadium experience as such.

Fan culture includes flag-waving and loud support for one’s own team. It definitely does not include throwing cups or other objects or any hostility toward the opposing team.

Personal responsibility on the part of our fans also includes civil courage. If disputes arise among ourselves, other VfLers should step forward and mediate. The principle applies: de-escalation instead of provocation!

Respectful interaction with each other, respectful behaviour towards other visitors and the environment are core elements that should distinguish VfL Bochum 1848. Fair play on the pitch, in the stands and outside the stadium. Not only in Bochum, but especially here. In every situation, we see ourselves as committed ambassadors of our VfL!

In order to bring the latter points (fan culture, civil courage, respectful treatment) closer to every stadium visitor once again and thus make the stadium experience once again the one we have all longed for over two years, information will be communicated around the home game against Leverkusen that will once again point out these central points and make it clear that every individual can contribute to supporting VfL Bochum 1848 on its successful path.
