Thorup: “Showed a great reaction”
Post-match reaction to 3-1 win against St. Pauli
Hear all the post-match reaction following FC Augsburg’s first win of the season against FC St. Pauli.
Marius Wolf: “It was a good reaction after the game against Heidenheim. We were dominant in the first half, but weren’t able to take the lead. We wanted and needed to show that we really wanted to win this game. That was evident on the pitch. The second half also showed that we have work to do still. But, this is an important win as we look ahead to the game against Mainz.”
Nediljko Labrović: “It was a tough game mentally and we’re happy to have taken all three points. You could see that everyone was giving it 100%. We were able to reward ourselves for our hard work and now want to carry this momentum with us into the coming weeks.”
Elvis Rexhbecaj: “Overall, we delivered a strong performance. The fans gave us extra motivation and created a fantastic atmosphere. We allowed our opponents too many chances in the final 30 minutes, but in the end, it was a deserved win at home – it feels good.”
Ruben Vargas: “It was an important win today in front of our fans, and our team spirit on the pitch was fantastic. We fought until the end and deservedly won.”
Jess Thorup (FC Augsburg head coach): “The team showed a great reaction today. The first half was solid – we controlled the game and created several chances, but were just missing a goal. At half-time, I told the lads that we just needed to continue doing what we were doing, which they did. Things became a bit hectic after they made it 2-1. I made some attacking changes to send a message to the team. We had a further three or four additional clear-cut chances. A look at the statistics will show that it was a fully deserved win. However, I didn’t like that we let it get so nervy at the end. I’m pleased with Henri’s debut. We have confidence in our players and are delighted to have taken all three points.”
Alexander Blessin (FC St. Pauli head coach): “We’re obviously disappointed because we had pictured something different. We wanted to be more aggressive, but we were too deep, sluggish and slow during the first half. That meant that we invited Augsburg to press us and gave them confidence. We wanted to start the second half with pace by bringing in some fresh legs, but then conceded after three minutes, although it was a clear foul in my eyes. We were then able to find our way into the game and get a goal back at 2-1. We were closer to making it 2-2 than Augsburg were to making it 3-1, but we then conceded from a counter-attack late on. Despite some strong phases of play in the second half, we’re heading home empty-handed.”
