Thorup: “Make the next step”
At home to Hoffenheim on Sunday
On Sunday, FC Augsburg welcome TSG Hoffenheim to the WWK ARENA for a 15:30 CET kick-off. On the back of a busy schedule, during which FCA picked up seven points from three matches, head coach Jess Thorup is feeling positive and well-motivated ahead of the challenges that await.
“We are feeling confident right now and do not want to let up, rather keeping pushing to make the next step forward,” emphasised Thorup. The Danish coach is expecting a tight contest against a Hoffenheim side who currently possess eight points and sit 16th in the table. According to Thorup, in order to maintain the good form at home, “We need to do the basics well.”
In that regard, FCA will not only be hoping to be solid at the back but also make things happen on the ball. “I view Hoffenheim as very tough opposition, who play good football. We have improved defensively over the last few matches but now need to control the possession more in order to create more opportunities for ourselves,” explained the FCA head coach, who can look forward to a match in front of a sold-out home ground once again.
Breithaupt absent while Rexhbecaj is suspended
There was a bitter pill to swallow in training for FCA this week when Tim Breithaupt suffered a bone splinter in his ankle. Although an operation is not required, the 22-year-old will be out for several weeks. Elvis Rexhbecaj will also be absent from the midfield due to suspension.
There is, however, some positive news regarding Mads Pedersen, who was able to complete the full week’s worth of team training and will be available for the upcoming sixth home match of the campaign. Meanwhile, Robert Gumny will once again play with the U23s in order to gain match practice. The expectation is also that Ruben Vargas will be able to return to action after the international break.
