Two minutes, two touches and a goal

It’s a crazy story. Bundesliga debutant Julian Malatini hadn’t even been on the pitch for two minutes when he slotted home to make it 3-1. Even the 22-year-old himself was a bit taken aback following his decisive goal in the 3-1 win over SC Freiburg: “I was suddenly in a position where I don’t usually find myself,” the Argentinean explained shortly after the game. As long as it benefits the Green-Whites, no one will mind.

Victory in our first home game of 2024

SV Werder Bremen came out on top in their opening home fixture of the calendar year in a 3-1 victory over SC Freiburg on Saturday afternoon, which was their second win on the trot. Marvin Ducksch converted a penalty to open the scoring for the Green-Whites in the first-half (9’), which the visitors responded to not long after with an equaliser from the spot by Vincenzo Grifo (28’). SVW then siezed control of the game after the break. Justin Njinmah fired home from range, followed by a solo goal from debutant Julían Malatini to round off a courageous performance in front of the home crowd.

“We’re on a roll!”

SV Werder Bremen’s first home fixture of 2024 saw them pick up all three points in a 3-1 win over SC Freiburg. This was the Green-Whites’ second consecutive win, something which they never would have believed in the first-half of the season. Julian Malatini made his dream debut and Michael Zetterer stood between the sticks on his ninth anniversary of signing for the club. Today was “just unreal” in the words of Justin Njinmah. Head coach Ole Werner is still of the opinion, however, that “every game comes down to fine margins and we have to remain disciplined.” WERDER.DE have summarised the reaction to the win.

Keep the unbeaten run going

After last weekend’s 1-0 win in Munich, SV Werder Bremen want to build on that performance and have more success on matchday 19. SC Freiburg are the visitors to the wohninvest WESERSTADION for SVW’s first home game of the new year on Saturday, 27th January 2024 (15:30 CET). Ole Werner’s team are currently unbeaten in five games and want to extend that run tomorrow afternoon.

The 27-year-old has started all 26 games in all competitions this season and, as vice-captain, is one of the Breisgau side’s leading players. In this WERDER.DE interview, Eggestein tells all about his role at the club, his feelings ahead of his return to Bremen, and competing with his brother in the Bundesliga.
