The first friendly of the season

It has almost become a tradition: TSG Hoffenheim will play their first friendly match of pre-season away to FC-Astoria Walldorf for the third straight year. After 2022 and 2023, TSG will again be the visitors to Dietmar-Hopp-Sportpark in 2024. Coach Pellegrino Matarazzo’s team face Walldorf on Saturday (13 July) at 17:00 CEST. After an arduous first week of training, the first highlight of preseason awaits.

Ambition, sweat and a new face

In a good mood and with intensive discussions about the European Championship final, the team travelled along the picturesque path to the training pitch. There, everyone focussed on the upcoming training sessions. After the activation, the co-trainers took over and challenged the professionals with a competitive fit. In small groups, outnumbered pairs chased after the ball and tried to capture it or score a mini goal. Head coach Bo Svensson then divided the players into three teams, who competed against each other in “everyone against everyone” mode on a section of the pitch with a total of six mini-goals. The focus was once again on pressing and run-up behaviour as well as quick transition play after winning the ball. Despite a dream goal by Lucas Tousart for “Team Red” and several saves by “Team Blue”, “Team Yellow” ultimately secured the training victory.

“We want to go a step further”

The question as to who brought the rainy weather is a relatively easy one to answer. Shortly before the SV Werder first-team took to the training pitch in Zell am Ziller, a light downpour began in traditional North German manner. “We feel at home,” chuckled head coach Ole Werner. “Not just because of the weather, but also because we’ve been here a few times before and can get some good work done in the next week and a half.”

Report: Bayern Munich will target Chelsea’s Mateo Kovacic if Ryan Gravenberch leaves this summer

There are a few factors in Kovacic’s favor, most notably his price. His contract expires next summer so the Blues have little leverage if he asks to leave. Kovacic would also be familiar with Thomas Tuchel’s system, having worked with him back during the latter’s stint in England.
