U23s set to host the league leaders

It was just last season that SV Elversberg moved up to the 3. Liga after being crowned champions of the Regionalliga Südwest. This season, the team from the Saarland seized the top spot on Matchday 11 and haven’t left it since. Promotion up to Bundesliga 2 looks inevitable. That said, the Elversberg machine has stalled somewhat in recent weeks; SV have gone without a win in each of their last three games.

SV Werder Bremen

Werder mount double comeback

SV Werder Bremen got off to a bad start in their first of two friendlies against RC Strasbourg, conceding twice through goals from Lucas Perrin (6’) and Marvin Senaya (18’). Things were looking better for Werder about 20 minutes later after goals from Oliver Burke (28’) and Nick Woltemade (34’) brought Werder level. Unfortunately, shortly before the break, Lebo Mothiba scored Strasbourg’s third regain the lead (45’). On the whole, the second half was quieter than the first, with Justin Njinmah’s pace making the difference on a number of occasions. One resulted in a penalty in the 71st minute that he converted himself to make it 3-3, which ended up being the final score.

Thomas Müller credits Bayern Munich for seeing off Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League

In statements compiled by kicker journalist Georg Holzner (as captured by Twitter account @iMiaSanMia), Man of the Match Müller (Müller of the Match?) said that the Bavarians took control in the second half after a rather difficult first half. “In a game like that, there are always moments when you need to suffer and create a little luck,” Müller said. “We were more controlled in our defending in the second half. We played the better game and ultimately deserved to win.”

TSG Hoffenheim

Bruun Larsen joins Burnley on loan

“Jacob is a highly talented attacking player with an incredible amount of potential. It is regrettable that such a gifted player has only been able to show his potential to a limited extent in recent years. He has had game time here and there, but unfortunately he has not been able to constantly produce his top performance level for TSG,” said TSG managing director Alexander Rosen, referring to “the injury history that has slowed Jacob down over for several weeks time and again in recent years. Following very targeted discussions, we have now come to the joint decision that a change of scenery would do Jacob some good. At Burnley, he will link up with his former coach from RSC Anderlecht, Vincent Kompany, with whom he has already worked successfully in Belgium.”

SV Werder Bremen

Late defeat in final pre-season friendly

Werder Bremen were the better team for large stretches of their second friendly vs. Strasbourg of the day. They took the lead through Jens Stage in the 34th minute after some aggressive pressing forced a mistake from the hosts. Habib Diallo equalised for Strasbourg in a second half marked by several hard fouls from the Ligue 1 side, as he latched onto a through ball before levelling the scores. A hint of misfortune combined with a lack of concentration was the difference between a draw and defeat as Kevin Gameiro’s 86th-minute shot was turned in by Abakar Sylla past a helpless Jiri Pavlenka. However, Werder can be pleased with their performance.
