Frederik Rönnow signs for Union

“I’m very happy with the move to Union. Last season wasn’t easy for me, but I want to put it all behind me and I’m looking forward to the new challenge in Berlin. What the team showed last season was impressive. I want to do my bit to be successful this season as well and play a good role in all three competitions,” said Frederik Rönnow.

SV Werder Bremen

Late 1-0 friendly win for Werder over Gladbach

The September sunshine was beating down on the pitch as SV Werder Bremen faced Borussia Mönchengladbach on Thursday evening. A generally even game was won late on by Werder thanks to an 85th-minute goal from Justin Njinmah. Lots of changes were made by both sides throughout the game, disrupting the flow of the game somewhat, but the Werder players yet to collect significant amounts of match time this season put in impressive performances. Several players from the U23 squad also slotted in seamlessly.

FC Augsburg

FCA held to 1-1 draw in Cologne

Following last weekend’s thrilling 3-2 win against VfL Wolfsburg, Thorup made one change to his starting line-up. Felix Uduokhai was serving a one-match suspension following his red card last time out (two yellows), and was replaced in the XI by Maximilian Bauer. Japhet Tanganga returned to the matchday squad for the first time after recovering from a knee injury.

The hosts didn’t need long to test FCA goalkeeper Finn Dahmen, with Luca Waldschmidt’s effort going just wide in the seventh minute). Less than 10 minutes later, Köln were able to take the lead through Linton Maina (16′). However, FCA quickly shook off this setback and nearly drew level just three minutes later through Ermedin Demirović, who was denied by the left post. Phillip Tietz then got on the end of a cross from Fredrik Jensen to equalise for FCA, netting his third goal in Thorup’s third match in charge (25′).

Both sides continued to press in seach of a go-ahead goal, with the hosts creating more, but FCA having the higher quality of chances. Niklas Dorsch nearly put FCA ahead just before the break, but his free kick from 18 metres out crashed off the crossbar (42′).

TSG Hoffenheim

10 years since the “ghost goal” – the trigger for goal line technology

“I can still remember our home match against Bayer Leverkusen in the 2013/2014 season and the so-called ‘ghost goal’,” said TSG’s now managing director Alexander Rosen, who was director of professional football at the time. “When Stefan Kießling climbed high in our box in the 70th minute and headed the ball toward our goal, I saw the net bulge, but at the time, I paid particular attention to the reactions of our players and those of the opposition. I was relieved that the ball had obviously missed the target, but suddenly a Leverkusen player began to celebrate after a short time delay. I was relaxed at first, but then quite quickly I was in disbelief, because referee Dr. Felix Brych went to the halfway line and ruled it was a goal for Leverkusen.”
