- “We started the game well and looked tidy before we let Wolfsburg score. We controlled the game, but just didn’t have enough clear-cut chances. We weren’t hungry enough in the final third. After we went down to ten men, the boys gave it their all to the very end.
It marks the end of an incredible journey for us. We’ve made a lot of good memories in the DFB-Pokal and won it twice, but history’s not going to repeat itself this year. I’d like to thank the fans today, they were really great. The away end was full, which was a strange, but amazing sight on a Tuesday evening.”
Péter Gulácsi
- “We knew it was going to be a tough game. Wolfsburg defended well and we didn’t create many chances. We controlled the game even when we went down to ten men, but we couldn’t find any space to create dangerous opportunities.
I’m really disappointed because we know how good it feels to play in the final. We’ve been to Berlin four times in the last five years, so it’s really, really tough to take.”
Christoph Baumgartner
- “We didn’t really dictate the game. Wolfsburg were on it and were ready to get their hands dirty. We also fought, but I don’t think we played well enough in the first half. The start to the second half was pretty tidy, but the red card obviously complicated matters. We were unfortunate over the course of the game. It just wasn’t meant to be this year. That’s just how it is in the Pokal: if you slip up once, you’re out.
The good thing is we don’t have much time to go around feeling sorry for ourselves. We’re back in action in three days and it’s a very important game as far as keeping in and around the top of the table is concerned. It’s never easy playing against Mainz. If we can flip the switch again, I’m sure we’ll be able to get back to winning ways.”
Rouven Schröder
- “There weren’t many chances in the game. Wolfsburg were very compact. Our build-up play was a bit sloppy and we didn’t put the opposition under as much pressure as we normally do.
I’m an athlete and, just like everyone else, I always want to get to the next round of the Pokal. It hurts that we’re out, of course. You can lose like that in the league, but not in the Pokal. Now, we’ll regroup and go into the game against Mainz full of energy in order to get the three points.”
