European soccer news: Leverkusen’s fairytale, all eyes on Toney

On Saturday, we saw Bayer Leverkusen’s fairytale season continue with a stoppage-time winner against RB Leipzig, Ivan Toney return to action for Brentford, and Arsenal edge Everton in the Women’s Super League. Meanwhile in Italy, Daniele De Rossi secured his first victory as manager of Roma after José Mourinho was sacked by the club earlier this week. Can the club legend turn things around in the second half of the campaign?

Borussia Dortmund

U17s suffer unlucky 2-1 defeat

BVB gifted Leverkusen two opportunities from individual errors, with the outstanding Ken Izekor taking full advantage and punishing the carelessness by scoring two goals in the 24th and 28th minute. The first resulted from an indirect free-kick after goalkeeper Aaron Held had picked up a backpass from Elias Benkara with his hands, while Izekor profited from an unfortunate defensive lapse by the usually alert Valon Cena for the second one.

SV Werder Bremen

There if the door opens

The task for SV Werder Bremen could hardly be more challenging at the start of the second half of the Bundesliga season on Sunday, 21.01.24, 15:30 CET. The Green-Whites are the visitors at FC Bayern München, with their last win against the Bavarian side coming 15 years ago. Nevertheless, it’s certainly possible for SVW to take something back with them on the long homeward journey to Bremen.

FC Augsburg

Lars Knudsen joins the FCA coaching team

Knudsen most recently worked with English Championship side Leicester City and also had a spell with the US national team as their set-piece coach between July 2022 and March 2023. Knudsen, who holds a UEFA Pro Licence, previously worked together with Thorup as his assistant coach for two and a half years at FC Midtjylland.

FCA sporting director Marinko Jurendic commented: “Lars impressed us during conversations with his expertise on set pieces and we believe that we can improve this important side of our game. His experience will make him an excellent addition to the coaching team. We’re looking forward to working together and wish Lars a successful start to life at FCA.”

FC Bayern München

Report: Former Bayern Munich manager Julian Nagelsmann in talks with Chelsea

Nagelsmann has always been an in-demand coach. The likes of Real Madrid, Chelsea and Tottenham seemed to always have their eyes on him, since his time at RB Leipzig. The Rekordmeister certainly aren’t the kind to throw money around for anyone, but they wanted Nagelsmann and came in ready with a huge amount. The contract of five years with the fee of €25 million made one thing very clear — the club believed in his vision enough to entrust a massive, long-term project in his hands.

VfB Stuttgart

Beaten at Bochum

VfB Stuttgart suffered an unfortunate 1-0 defeat at VfL Bochum on Saturday.

1. FC Union Berlin

Second Versus Third

Both Borussia Dortmund and Union’s hopes of a DFB Pokal semi-final appearance in Berlin’s Olympiastadion were shattered during the week. On Tuesday, Union lost 2-0 away at Eintracht Frankfurt, and on Wednesday Dortmund suffered the same fate, by the same scoreline in Leipzig. With neither side involved in European competition either, both sides are now fully focused on the Bundesliga where they currently occupy the second and third spots, with only two points separating them.
