Werder come out on top in Munich!

What a result! SV Werder Bremen will take all three points home from Munich after a hard-fought performance saw them record a 1-0 win against record champions FC Bayern München – the first time the Green-Whites had beaten the Bavarians in over 15 years! Mitchell Weiser scored the winning goal with a well-worked effort from a tight angle (59′), helping SVW to a historic victory.

FCA come back from behind in 2-1 victory over Gladbach

FCA head coach Jess Thorup opted to keep the exact starting XI for the clash against Gladbach from last weekend’s narrow 1-0 home defeat to league frontrunners Bayer 04 Leverkusen. Arne Engels took the place of Niklas Dorsch on the left, who was suspended after receiving five yellow cards this season. Kristijan Jakić started the match on the bench, after having only signed for FCA earlier this week.

Only two points separated the sides prior to Sunday evening’s clash, so it was a great opportunity for the Függerstädter to climb ahead of Borussia. The visitors delivered a promising first-half performance, with three clear-cut chances in the first 15 minutes through Ermedin Demirović (10’), Fredrik Jensen (11’) and Ruben Vargas (12’), whose header effort was denied by Gladbach keeper Moritz Nicolas.

The match was interrupted for several minutes due to a protest from the Gladbach fans, which was vital in helping the home side in particular to get settled into the game. Borussia opened the scoring in the 26th minute: Straight after a corner, Alassane Pléa delivered a cross from the right, which Jordan Siebatcheu was able to scramble in from close range. Thorup’s side had 59 percent possession and recorded a pass completion rate of 85 percent over the first 45 minutes, but were unable to hit home a much-needed equaliser before the break.

Szalai joins SC Freiburg on loan

“Attila has a lot of qualities that will enable him to be a good centre-back in the Bundesliga. He also has an outstanding character and is a guy who gives everything for himself and his team-mates at all times – even in a situation that is extremely complicated for him,” said TSG managing director Alexander Rosen. “But we all have to be honest and realise that the signing hasn’t worked out for him or TSG up till now. That’s why we’ve reached a mutual decision for him to go out on loan to Freiburg until the end of the season so that he can have a fresh start in the summer after what will hopefully be a successful EURO for him,” explained Rosen.

BVB beat Ajax 3-1 at the season opening event

The 80,500 spectators at SIGNAL IDUNA PARK witnessed a BVB who posed a danger straight from the off. In the third minute, new signing Marcel Sabitzer embarked upon a run from deep and registered the first shot of the match, which was saved by goalkeeper Geronimo Rulli. This foray was followed by the first goal: Mats Hummels had the vision over on the left flank to play the ball into the middle towards Julian Brandt, who stuck his foot on the end of it to make it 1-0 (6). The celebrations that followed the opening goal had only just died down when Ajax levelled at 1-1 via a Brian Brobbey header only a minute later. But BVB continued to have the better chances thereafter – through Niklas Süle (10) and Marco Reus, whose shot was saved by Rulli at the near post (14).

SV Werder Bremen

“We had the perfect day”

SV Werder Bremen rewrote history on Sunday afternoon after defeating reigning Bundesliga champions FC Bayern München. The 1-0 victory not only marked the Green-Whites’ first win on the road this season, but also their first in Munich in 15 years. The three points were also vital in keeping SVW clear of the relegation zone, and the atmosphere in the mixed zone was naturally positive as a result. WERDER.DE have summarised the reaction to the spectacle.

Nathanaël Mbuku joins Saint-Étienne on loan

Mbuku moved to the Fuggerstädter from Stade Reims at the end of January 2023 and has made three Bundesliga appearances so far, including one this season. The 21-year-old has also played three games in the Regionalliga Bayern for FCA’s U23s during the current campaign, chipping in with two goals and an assist.

“We’ve been impressed by Nathanaël’s ability and potential. Because of competition in the squad though, we think that a loan makes sense at this point in time. We hope that Nathanaël will get as many minutes as possible at Saint-Étienne and develop further in order to come back to Augsburg stronger in the summer,” said FCA sporting director Marinko Jurendic.
