Moraitou then spent one and a half years in the USA from summer 2019 until the beginning of 2021, playing for the University of South Alabama, finally returning to SV Meppen and the Bundesliga in January 2021. Although Meppen were unable to avoid relegation, Moraitou played a major role in the team’s direct return to the Bundesliga in the 2021/22 season. So far, the midfielder has played 19 Bundesliga games for the Emslanders. 

Lehmann only made minor tweaks to the starting line-up that suffered an unfortunate 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen in their opening game: Jonas Feddersen deputised for Tyler Meiser, who had moved up to the U19s, in central defence, while Oliwer Blaszczyk was drafted into the team and Fritz Fleck replaced Justin Hoy.

“We’re very satisfied because today was about getting through to the next round of the DFB-Pokal. We’re not so satisfied with the opening phase. We made the game unnecessarily tough for ourselves and gave the opposition what they perhaps wanted. We tried to play too many balls through the middle too quickly rather than looking to go down the flanks and tiring the opponent out. We then corrected that well, scored six goals and created more chances. We gave away nothing more in the second period; in the first, it was two chances from set-pieces. We’ll speak about that.”
