Borussia Dortmund’s U17s dropped two points in the closing stages of their away game against SC Paderborn. SCP used a set-piece in added time to level the scores at 3-3. “The disappointment runs deep,” said coach Marco Lehmann after the match.
Lehmann only made minor tweaks to the starting line-up that suffered an unfortunate 2-1 defeat at the hands of Bayer Leverkusen in their opening game: Jonas Feddersen deputised for Tyler Meiser, who had moved up to the U19s, in central defence, while Oliwer Blaszczyk was drafted into the team and Fritz Fleck replaced Justin Hoy.
BVB made a courageous and confident start and were rewarded for their bold display after only three minutes. Former Bielefeld player Nick Cherny finished off a remarkable piece of individual play with a goal to make it 1-0.
Borussia continued to be well in the game and dominated Paderborn, who themselves attacked exclusively via long balls. That made the equaliser via a long-range shot from Jan Peters in the 20th minute all the more surprising. “The heads went down after that and not much went right until the break,” said coach Lehmann in summary of the rest of the first period.
BVB made another highly promising start after the interval: Nick Cherny got the better of two opposing players and produced a fine assist for Oskar Schwarz, who only had to tap the ball over the line to make it 2-1 (48). But Paderborn, who had kicked off their campaign with a 5-0 victory away to Viktoria Köln, took advantage of every moment of carelessness from the opposition.
Paderborn consistently punish Dortmund’s errors
One such moment came in the 65th minute when a loss of possession from Leys Ukar led to another equaliser by Luis Engels. This time, the Black & Yellows reacted defiantly and applied pressure. As a result, they went ahead again in the 78th minute through an own goal that was assisted by Diego Ngambia Dzonga and then defended that lead until shortly before the end. The bitter leveller from Paderborn’s Luca Karlowski came in the third minute of added time.
“Paderborn were a physically robust and unpleasant opponent who will still pick up some points yet. That said, we should have won this game; unfortunately, we denied ourselves the victory by making two glaring errors,” summarised Marco Lehmann.
The U17s will be away to RW Essen next Saturday (11:00 CET).
BVB: Held – Cena, Benkara, Feddersen, Blaszczyk – Ukar, Degener (Kaba, 77) – Fleck (Hoy, 73), Cherny, Schwarz (Markötter, 73), Ngambia Dzonga (Driedger, 89)
