At the press conference, Edin Terzic spoke not only about the cup tie in Mainz and several personnel matters, but also about the upcoming start of the league season next weekend.
Edin Terzic on the balance of play:
“We’re very satisfied because today was about getting through to the next round of the DFB-Pokal. We’re not so satisfied with the opening phase. We made the game unnecessarily tough for ourselves and gave the opposition what they perhaps wanted. We tried to play too many balls through the middle too quickly rather than looking to go down the flanks and tiring the opponent out. We then corrected that well, scored six goals and created more chances. We gave away nothing more in the second period; in the first, it was two chances from set-pieces. We’ll speak about that.”
…on the team’s form a week before the start of the league:
“We’ve shown many good things in the Bundesliga in 2023. There has only been one defeat for us this calendar year. There were four unnecessary draws. The clear mission is to learn from the first few games of last season in which we unnecessarily dropped too many points. We don’t want to be chasing after the music, but to be present from the start. Our preparations are not yet over. We’ll use the rest of August to train a great deal. We’re only playing once a week.”
…on the great crowd in Mainz:
“It was a great game in terms of the atmosphere. Compliments to Schott Mainz. We’ve been welcomed outstandingly. Our Black & Yellow boys and girls in the stands also did their bit to ensure we finally had a DFB-Pokal home game again. That hasn’t been the case for a long time.”
…on the substitution of Niklas Süle:
“He got a shove in the back. He signalled he could continue but we didn’t want to take any risks.”
…on the absence of Karim Adeyemi and Felix Nmecha:
“Karim is looking a lot better, so we expect him to return to training at the start of next week. Felix’s ankle has still been painful in the past few days. We’re also hopeful that he’ll be fit for the start of the season. We’ll decide if Cologne comes too soon, but both of them are on a really good path.”
