In a press conference on Wednesday afternoon, SV Werder Bremen announced that Clemens Fritz would assume the role of managing director for sport when Frank Baumann steps down in summer. “We’re really happy about it because we’ve got a lot of faith in Clemens as a person, in his ability and in his strategy. We think that our sporting future is in good hands with Clemens,” stated Dr. Hubertus Hess-Grunewald, the chairman of SVW’s supervisory board.

Per a new report from kicker’s Georg Holzner, as captured by @iMiaSanMia, the finger-pointing has turned to the remaining pieces of last summer’s heralded recruitment trifecta: sporting director Hasan “Brazzo” Salihamidžić and technical director Marco Neppe, who are “under pressure.”

After the draw was made, SC captain Christian Günter said: “It’s a bit silly that you can play against your group stage opponents in the last 16. I wasn’t there for the last game, but I will be this time. We can go there full of confidence. It’s not out of the question that we’ll advance and get to face a new opponent.”

SV Werder Bremen’s next challenge is on the horizon as they prepare to take on SV Darmstadt 98 on Saturday, 24th February (15:30 CET) at the wohninvest WESERSTADION. The Green-Whites are regarded as the favourites going into the clash, but Ole Werner is hesitant to let this have too much of an impact on their approach. “We always want to perform to the best of our ability, irrespective of who we’re up against,” expressed the head coach in the pre-match press conference on Thursday afternoon.

“Something like that is stupid. As coach of FC Bayern, you have to attempt to learn more every single day.” Babbel confessed that there were many things “that made me shake my head and think that FC Bayern at the moment is still out of his league. He’s just too childish.”

“It may sound a little strange to many people at first when I speak of a great talent in reference to Benni Hübner,” said TSG Managing Director Alexander Rosen with a grin, before going on to explain: “Of course, I’m not referring to the player in this instance, but rather Benjamin Hübner the coach. During his training programme with TSG as a member of the coaching staff for the U19s in the Bundesliga Süd/Südwest, Benni very quickly showed the potential he has as a coach. Having already worked actively with the first team in recent weeks and made a strong impression too, it is with full conviction that we have now decided to integrate this exciting coaching talent into the first-team coaching staff with immediate effect. Even though he obviously still has a lot to learn, we are sure that Benni – with his communicative nature, his excellent understanding of football and his strong personality – will be an excellent addition to the existing team led by head coach Pellegrino Matarazzo in the short term.”
