VfL Wolfsburg

Positive record

Despite a good performance against Borussia Dortmund last week, VfL Wolfsburg are still without a Bundesliga win in 2024. The next chance for Niko Kovac’s side to change that arrives when they travel to Eintracht Frankfurt’s Deutsche Bank Park on Sunday 25 February (kick-off 15:30 CET). The Wolves earned a 2-0 home win in the return fixture in September last year thanks to a Jonas Wind brace.

Moukoko & Brunner receive Fritz Walter gold medal

The honour for the best young player born in 2004 has gone to Youssoufa Moukoko this year. The 18-year-old beat Brajan Gruda (1. FSV Mainz 05) and Umut Tohumcu (TSG 1899 Hoffenheim) to the award. It is the second time that Moukoko has been awarded the Fritz Walter medal, after 2021. The striker has been with BVB since 2016 and progressed through the youth teams, before becoming the youngest player in Bundesliga history one day after his 16th birthday. He has so far made 58 appearances for BVB in the Bundesliga.

SV Werder Bremen

“We let ourselves down”

There was a very mixed reaction among the Green-Whites to SV Werder Bremen’s 1-1 draw at home to SV Darmstadt 98 on matchday 23. On the one hand, some were of the opinion that the hosts could have come out on top considering the way the game went, while others were grateful for the luck they were handed after two of the Lilies’ goals were overruled by VAR. WERDER.DE were in the mixed zone after the game to gather the reaction to the 1-1 draw.

TSG mourn the death of Helmut Gross

If you ever find yourself asking the question why so many successful coaches come from the south-west of Germany, you will automatically end up with one common denominator: Helmut Gross. The Geislingen native has inspired generations of football coaches with his vision of covering spaces based around the position of the ball. For former TSG head coaches Ralf Rangnick and Markus Gisdol, he was not only a role model, but also a consultant and mentor for a long time. Julian Nagelsmann, Jürgen Klopp, Thomas Tuchel – they all came into contact with his footballing philosophy. The trained bridge-building engineer had tactically dismantled football and reassembled it like a true tinkerer. It was a Swabian revolution. As head coach, Helmut Groß led SC Geislingen into the German third tier in the late-1970s. But the father of two did not seek the spotlight. He preferred to stay in the background, encouraging and inspiring coaches – and in doing so, he changed German football. But Helmut Groß not only moulded many Hoffenheim head coaches, he was also officially a scout at TSG from 2008 to 2012. On Thursday 22 February, the Geislingen native died at the age of 77. TSG are mourning the passing of not only a former employee, but also a man who shaped German football.
