There is a tricky opponent in store for the BVB U23s on Matchday 26 of the 3. Liga season: Dynamo Dresden are not only a renowned and tradition-steeped club, but the third-strongest team in the second half-season too. The side from Saxony have not lost any of their fixtures in the second half of the campaign, taking 14 out of a possible 18 points. Dynamo’s last defeat to date came on 8 November, when they lost 1-0Pre-match report in Wiesbaden.

Second-top travel to second-bottom – but Terzic doesn’t want to read much into this going into the match: ”It will be a game, like always, that is defined by emotion and intensity and in which the league table doesn’t tell us anything. All that matters is the 90 minutes.” It should also be noted that the league table from the second half of the season thus far tells a different story: BVB are top, with six wins from six games, while Schalke are seventh, with two wins and four draws. The Gelsenkirchen club have kept five clean sheets in these matches. 

“The training sessions have gone very well for those who were here,” said the BVB coach, as he reflected positively on the past fortnight. A lot of intensive work was conducted in small groups. That period went less well for some of the international players. Alina Grijseels, for example, could not make an appearance in the German national team’s second game against Poland. “She’s unfortunately still suffering from her dead leg. Lisa Antl and Zoë Sprengers also have minor problems. We’ll see how we can deal with it.”

The A-Junior Bundesliga West is set for a heart-stopping final day. BVB (34 points) will head into the last matchday in the best position, ahead of 1. FC Cologne (32) and FC Schalke 04 (31). Cologne will be away to already relegated VfB Hilden, with Schalke visiting an ambitious Borussia Mönchengladbach in fourth place. “We have everything in our hands and are not looking elsewhere,” declared Mike Tullberg, who is not yet turning his thoughts to the UEFA Youth League quarter-final against Hajduk Split on Tuesday (18:30 CET at Stadion Niederrhein in Oberhausen) and clarified: “The West German Championship would mean a lot to me and the boys because it’s the reward for a full year’s work.”

Even the weather gods seemed to be up against BVB in the build-up to the game: freezing temperatures and snowfall made it impossible for the game to be played in the youth team’s stadium, so the match had to be moved to pitch 4 on the training ground. Head coach Thomas Sulewski made one change to the starting line-up from the Ahlen game, with Nora Rechenbach replacing Hanna Hentrich.

The auction ended last Sunday and raised over €70,000 in total. The proceeds will be used for emergency earthquake relief in Turkey and Syria.  The special shirts were up for auction for two weeks.
