A week without fixtures has certainly helped, because the match against Siofok KC in front of more than 11,000 fans at the Westfalenhalle last Sunday was extremely emotional. “That was really unique. So many people getting behind you, cheering for the team, singing songs…. It was an atmosphere you don’t get in handball in Germany,” reflected the BVB coach. He is happy that his players responded with a good performance and a victory for the spectators. “It was simply a wonderful experience and I hope it can happen again,” the Dutchman said.

The record game was a few days ago now. Have you already been able to process this extraordinary experience?

In the aftermath of the 4-1 victory against Hertha BSC last Sunday – the eighth competitive win in a row – BVB head coach Edin Terzic gave his team Monday off. The preparations for the Hoffenheim match then commenced on Tuesday with a public training session. The intensity levels then stepped up a notch at the training ground in Brackel on Wednesday when the players were put through their paces in an extensive session that included an 11 vs. 11 match. The workload is set to be brought back down slightly on Thursday in order to ensure it can be raised again at the final training session the day before the game. “Then we’re sure we’ll head into the next challenge fresh and with lots of self-confidence,” Terzic said.

BVB are currently placed 3rd in the Bundesliga, while the visitors from Bensheim are 8th. The two teams met almost three weeks ago in the DHB-Pokal, with BVB being edged out 34-33 away from home and thus narrowly missing out on the Final Four. After the historic win over Siofok KC on Saturday, which saw the Black & Yellows finish top of their group in the European League, the team are now aiming to fire their way to the top of the Bundesliga.

Like 11 years ago: For the second time in their history, Borussia Dortmund have won their first eight competitive games of a calendar year. It had previously only happened in 2011/12, when BVB went on to lift the double.

Edin Terzic on the balance of play:
“After the highlight in midweek, it was important to start the match well. We didn’t manage that. We had a lot of unnecessary losses of possession in the middle and then switched it around in our build-up play with one additional player in the middle. As a result, we took control of the match and went in 2-0 up at the break. We then addressed several things we wanted to do better, but we didn’t start the second half well and conceded after a minute as we did not go into the tackles with the same toughness as we have recently, as we didn’t want to contest the important challenges and prevent the counter-attacks. That was significantly better in our previous matches. We then suddenly pulled ourselves together and gained a much better foothold in the game again. The win was important and it was also deserved in my opinion.”
