Serie A side Roma are looking to sign Tottenham defender Eric Dier in the summer transfer window, according to reports.

The England international has made 355 appearances in all competitions since joining from Sporting Lisbon in 2014 and has been a regular most seasons.

He has been used as a centre-back this season but has been known to operate in midfield in the past with the 29-year-old appearing 39 times in all competitions this term.

Dier is out of contract at the end of next season with the defender attracting interest from a number of clubs, including Serie A side Roma.

Roma are well placed under Jose Mourinho to qualify for the Champions League next season with the Giallorossi fifth in the table level on points with fourth-placed Inter Milan

And Italian website Romagiallorossa claim that Roma are looking to back the ‘Special One’ in the market once again with the club ‘very active on free transfers’ during the international break.

Mourinho is ‘increasingly convinced to continue the adventure’ at Roma, despite some reports that Chelsea could consider him for their manager’s job.

The Roma hierarchy have ‘accepted the requests’ of Mourinho to strengthen midfield and defence with Dani Ceballos of Real Madrid and Daichi Kamada of Eintracht Frankfurt their top targets in the middle of the park.

It is understood that ‘first contacts’ have been made with those two midfielders, while they are ‘working on another coup’ in defence with Roma ‘initiating contacts’ with Spurs over Dier.

They are hopeful that ‘good relations with the London club could favour talks’ but that their participation in the Champions League will be crucial over convincing Dier to join.

Dier was praised for his passing ability by Jamie Carragher during their 1-1 draw against Everton on Monday night.

The former Liverpool defender said on Sky Sports: “I think some of the passing out from the back, Eric Dier’s been involved, some of the passing has been fantastic.

“They got the wing backs in behind because Everton’s full backs play so narrow.”

And AS Roma Live now insist that Llorente has ‘closed his cycle’ at Leeds and has urged Mourinho and the Italian club to ‘give it a try’ and make his move permanent.
