Michael Owen does not believe Liverpool need a huge rebuild at the end of the season having been “two games away” from a quadruple this time last year.

The Reds are expected to be very busy when the 2022-23 campaign ends.

They will sign at least one midfielder – with Borussia Dortmund’s Jude Bellingham their top target.

It has been a very disappointing season at Anfield, which is surprising considering the fact Klopp’s side were pursuing a historic quadruple this time last year.

Liverpool are outsiders to finish inside the top four of the Premier League – which is now the club’s only route to the Champions League having been knocked out of the competition by Real Madrid this week.

The Reds are currently sixth in the top flight, six points behind fourth-placed Tottenham with two games in hand.

Brighton are in a surprisingly decent position to finish inside the Champions League places having accumulated the same amount of points as Liverpool with one less game played.

With Liverpool struggling this term, there has been a lot said about the future of Klopp.

The German has done an outstanding job at Anfield and there is little to no chance he will ever be sacked.

However, he might decide to walk and hand over the keys to a new manager with a huge rebuild potentially on the cards.

Lots of first-team players are out of contract at the end of the season – including Naby Keita and Roberto Firmino – so plenty of reinforcements are needed.

Klopp will need to bolster his squad, but the supposed rebuild the club desperately demand does seem a little far-fetched, according to Michael Owen.

He told BT Sport: “When you talk to Liverpool fans, you say is it because [Sadio] Mane left? Is it because all of the injuries?

“Last season, only eight months ago, they were two games off being the most decorated team in history. Two games away. Not much has changed since then.

“And all of these people saying: ‘Let’s rip everything up and start again, buy new players’, and whatever. We have seen in patches, Liverpool have been brilliant this season; it’s the consistency.

“Jurgen Klopp, the players, the board, the fans, everything has been successful from years and years and years.

“This group of people are proven that they can win things. So to say, ‘let’s just tear everything up’ is totally wrong.

“He [Klopp] knows they’re going to need to reinvest in the midfield area, he would have done that anyway and that’ll happen in the summer, but I think they deserve a bit of patience after what they’ve done over the last few years.”
