Eddie Howe has labelled Erik Ten Hag’s time-wasting complaints as ‘nonsense’ after Newcastle beat Manchester United yesterday.

Goals from Joe Willock and Callum Wilson saw Howe’s team record a over the Red Devils and leap-frog them in the table.

Before the game, Manchester United boss Ten Hag had claimed Newcastle were known to ‘delay’ games.

He said “We know they delay, yeah. It’s something that is what the referees don’t want, they want to have tempo in the game. That is the aim of the Premier League to have tempo in the game. So they (referees) also have to be consistent to let the game go. Do and act what the policy is.”

Howe and Ten Hag got into a heated exchange on the side-line during the second half as Newcastle tried to see out the victory, with Ten Hag visibly angry over Newcastle’s tactics.

Speaking after the game, Howe praised his team’s performance and defended their style of play.

He said: “We play a quick game. I don’t know where this time-wasting nonsense has come from because it’s not us and you saw today we wanted the ball back in play as quickly as possible, high energy, high tempo, ball in play.

“I’ll always stand up for my team, I’ll always stand up for what I believe is right.”

When asked about Ten Hag’s comments, How said: “I think if something’s not accurate, then naturally you want to put the right point across.

“But we fully deserved the win. We showed real belief. Today is a blueprint for how we want the team to play, in almost every phase.”

Newcastle’s official twitter were quick to jump on Ten Hag’s comments after the match, poking fun at the complaints against the team.

Tottenham have the chance to jump over both team when they take on Everton tonight.

Victory against The Red Devils also offers Newcastle revenge for the , which saw Manchester United defeat Newcastle by the same scoreline.

But Howe claimed revenge wasn’t the catalyst for the win.

He said: “It [Carabao Cup Final] wasn’t on our mind today, it was about winning the game that we needed to win in the league.”

Howe added: “We deserved the win and it was a really good performance. We prepared well. We had to be patient after creating chances we didn’t take. We showed real belief. Most aspects of the team were strong. The first goal was a great goal. The physical outputs were huge.”
