Following on from their 1-0 DFB Cup triumph over RB Leipzig, VfL Wolfsburg beat the same opposition 2-1 in the Bundesliga on Saturday to end a five-game winless streak in the league. Jonas Wind scored his ninth goal of the season (9′), and after Yussuf Poulsen had equalised (52′), Rogerio netted the winner with his first goal for the club (66′). The Green-and-Whites are next in action on Saturday 2 December away to VfL Bochum (kick-off 15:30 CET).

Niko Kovac: “My team defended as if their lives depended on it. We knew we’d need to do that because Leipzig are a really good Champions-League-calibre side. It was a hard-fought win with a lot of passion. And it was a touch fortunate, as Koen was superb in goal and put in a world-class performance today. But you need that when you’ve only taken one point from five games, which is the situation we were in. I’m pleased we managed to win today. In terms of our football, we can do much better, although I have to say that both of our goals were really well worked.”

Marco Rose: “Wolfsburg appear to be our bogey team of late. I’m very frustrated – not so much by the way the team played out on the pitch, because we did a lot of things well – but it’s the result that makes me really angry. There’s no point talking about good luck or bad luck – at the end of the day, we had 90 minutes to turn the game our way and we didn’t.”

VfL Wolfsburg: Casteels – Lacroix, Bornauw (46’ Jenz), Zesiger – Baku, Svanberg (83‘ Gerhardt), Vranckx, Rogerio – Cerny (73‘ Paredes), Majer (77‘ Arnold) – Wind (83‘ Tomas)

RB Leipzig: Blaswich – Henrichs, Simakan, Lukeba, Raum – Haidara (83. Carvalho), Schlager, Baumgartner (83‘ Seiwald), Xavi – Poulsen (73‘ Forsberg), Openda

Subs: Gulacsi (GK), Klostermann, Lenz, Moriba, Kampl, Sesko

Goals: 1-0 Wind (9‘), 1-1 Poulsen (52‘), 2-1 Rogerio (66‘)

Yellow cards: Svanberg, Zesiger, Lacroix, Casteels / Openda, Xavi

Referee: Robert Hartmann (Kempten)

Attendance: 25,350 at Volkswagen Arena, Wolfsburg
