Having flown out of the traps with two resounding victories before suffering setbacks in both the league and cup, VfL Wolfsburg have had an eventful start to the new year to say the least. The drama is set to continue when the Green-and-Whites host FC Bayern Munich at home at 17:30 CET on Sunday. At his press conference ahead of the game with the Bundesliga giants, VfL head coach Niko Kovac answered the media’s questions on…

… the Wolves’ stuttering momentum: “The last two games were pretty even, so it’s frustrating that we lost both of them. I still think we’re a solid enough outfit, though. We still believe in the things we did really well in the weeks before [the defeats] and we remain true to ourselves. We’re playing at home, where we’ve picked up 13 points from our last five games. That should give us the confidence we need against Bayern Munich.”

… personnel: “Koen Casteels is back and will start in goal, provided nothing else happens. Lukas Nmecha also trained with the team today and the day before yesterday, so all our players are available.”

… VfL’s opponents: “There are more enjoyable tasks than taking on Bayern at the moment. The individual quality in their squad is extraordinary. Bayern are the best team in the league away from home, losing just once. You need a really good day and a bit of luck to beat them. You have to find good solutions and make good decisions.”

… Bayern’s winless run: “We’ve looked at their last three games – Bayern were the better team in all three. Not all their shots went in, but they still created numerous clear-cut opportunities. If one or two more had led to goals, they would have won comfortably. In that respect, we’re not fooled by those three draws. We know what we have to expect. Bayern are still favourites for the title.”

… the Wolves’ approach: “Even though we’re up against the toughest opponents in the league, we still have to defend well, be compact, make the most of our transitions and try to keep possession as well as possible. Above all, we have to show a good mentality and believe we can get something. It’s important that we make sacrifices and we’re there for each other. Only if we do that can we make it an open game.”
