Jakub Kaminski moved to VfL Wolfsburg from Lech Poznań two years ago. The 21-year-old winger caught the eye in his debut campaign with four goals and three assists in 31 Bundesliga games, but the young Pole has found it a bit more difficult this season. In this interview, Kaminski talks about his assist against Darmstadt, the European Championship and the upcoming away match against Bayern Munich.
Jakub, you registered your first goal involvement of this season in the 3-0 win against Darmstadt. How did that feel?
Jakub: “It was a very good feeling, providing that assist for Vaclav Cerny. This season hasn’t been easy for me because I’ve not played as much. Nonetheless, I’m very happy that the coach brought me on and that I could repay his trust.”
You moved to Germany from Poland in summer 2022. How have your first two years in the Bundesliga been?
Jakub: “I feel very at home in Wolfsburg. I’m acquainted with everyone at the club by now. I’m a player and person who works hard and always gives everything. I really like the overall package at Wolfsburg.”
The European Championship in Germany is coming up in the summer. Poland have qualified and you could be there. How are you viewing this tournament?
Jakub: “Taking part in the European Championship would be an absolute dream for me. I’ve already been lucky enough to play at a World Cup with Poland and played a lot of games. We’ll see what the coming weeks bring. I haven’t played much this season, but I was able to give a good account of myself last week and will also give everything in the final two games to increase my chances of being involved.”
Back to day-to-day matters: VfL head to FC Bayern this weekend. What sort of match are you expecting against the German record champions?
Jakub: “A lot’s been said about Bayern’s somewhat poorer Bundesliga season, but they’re still a strong team and didn’t reach the semi-finals of the Champions League by accident. So, it won’t be an easy game for us, even though they might have come back from Madrid a bit tired. We’ll certainly put up a fight. I at least have very good memories of Bayern Munich because I scored my first Bundesliga goal against them. Who knows, maybe on Sunday I’ll score the winner (laughs).”
