Injuries and illness have thwarted him at times this season, but Moritz Jenz hasn’t taken long to establish himself in the VfL Wolfsburg first team. The defender has appeared in 15 of a possible 22 Bundesliga games for the Wolves since his arrival, playing the full 90 minutes on 12 occasions. Speaking ahead of the trip to Frankfurt on Sunday 25 February (15:30 CET), Jenz talks about dealing with a broken nose, VfL’s current position and the upcoming clash with the Eagles.

Moritz Jenz, you’ve been wearing a mask in training since colliding with Union’s Andras Schäfer in Berlin. How are you doing after your injury?

Moritz Jenz: “My nose is fine. I’m still training with a mask, which is a new experience for me. But I feel safe with it on and it’s comfortable to wear – even during games. We tried a transparent plastic mask at first, but it wasn’t as comfortable. It was heavier and felt a bit tight, whereas my current carbon mask is lighter and has been adjusted for me at the sides so my field of vision isn’t restricted.”

As a team, you’ve been performing a little below expectations so far this season. After four draws and a narrow defeat at Union, you claimed a respectable 1-1 draw against Borussia Dortmund. How do you assess the current situation?

Moritz: “We haven’t had the results we wanted. The game against BVB was definitely a step in the right direction. We’re working hard on turning things around and are actually playing good football. We just need to start scoring one or two more key goals, but I’m thoroughly convinced we’ll manage that in our next few games.”
